LGU-Tagkawayan taps NAMRIA's expertise in Geomatics Technology

A total of 25 personnel from the municipality of Tagkawayan in Quezon Province successfully completed the training in Basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. The training was conducted by the NAMRIA Geomatics Training Center at the Municipal Building of Tagkawayan, Quezon Province on 31 July-04 August 2023. It was initiated by the Municipal Planning Development Office led by EnP Francis T. Villanueva and senior staff member, Mr. Froilan O. Marfori. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed by NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco, PhD and Tagkawayan Mayor Luis Oscar T. Eleazar.

The primary objective of the comprehensive training was to equip participants with the skills necessary for utilizing GIS in various aspects, such as decision-making, program/project monitoring and evaluation, disaster and risk assessment, and map creation. These skills are vital for the development of the municipality's comprehensive land use plan and they support the conduct of the annual activities of the local government unit (LGU) in accordance with its mandates.
 
The training topics included map appreciation, introduction to GIS, application of GIS, data management, georeferencing, tracing, geoprocessing tools, and hazard spatial overlay and analysis. The required final outputs for the participants were laid-out hazard maps and other layers helpful in the planning and delivery of services by the LGU to their constituents.

The NAMRIA training team was composed of Mr. Jeff N. Hunt and Ms. Nilca Jane F. Fabellon who served as lecturers, while Mr. Marco Arkiel C. Ilagan and Mr. Manuel Lorenzana Jr. served as facilitators. A courtesy call on Mayor Eleazar was also made by the team. He and his staff were briefed on what will transpire in the training, the usefulness of data acquired by the LGU, and how to manage and maximize its usage. The opening remarks for the training were delivered by Executive Assistant, Mr. Glen D. Tolentino, who represented Mayor Eleazar. Mr. Tolentino discussed the future plans and programs of the LGU and encouraged the participants to seize the opportunity of gaining additional knowledge and upgrading their skills in using GIS. The actual courtesy call and the training were broadcasted and streamed from the municipality’s local radio network and online platform, Tagkawayan Teleradyo.
