As part of NAMRIA’s continuing engagement to help in the capacity building of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), the agency held a briefing and tour of facilities for select technical personnel of the 300th Air Intelligence and Security Wing (AISW). The activity was conducted on 12 October 2022 at the NAMRIA Lecture Hall. The briefing and tour of facilities aimed to share with AISW-PAF the experience and expertise of NAMRIA in terms of geodatabase management. The AISW-PAF is presently planning the establishment of a database center to manage, process, disseminate, and protect confidential intelligence information.

NAMRIA is a member of the AISW Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Board (MSAB)—the board that provides technical assistance and advice to enhance the capability of AISW-PAF. NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco, PhD, and Mapping and Geodesy Branch (MGB) Dir. Ruel DM. Belen, MNSA, are the representatives for the agency to the AISW MSAB.

In his welcome message, Administrator Tiangco highlighted the importance of having competent human resources to ensure the sustainability of complex projects, such as the establishment and maintenance of geodata centers. He also shared how NAMRIA overcame the challenges in operationalizing its data center, given the limited resources. Administrator Tiangco further reiterated NAMRIA’s commitment in helping AISW-PAF in building its database management facilities. In his closing message, MGB Director Belen stressed the need to not just sustain but also level up competencies, particularly in this age where conflicts, he said, are waged beyond traditional means, and into the digital realm, as well.

The AISW Director for Operations expressed his gratitude for NAMRIA’s continued support to the AISW-PAF initiatives, particularly on capacity building and geospatial data sharing. He likewise relayed AISW-PAF’s willingness to share resources in order to help NAMRIA fulfill its mandate of providing reliable fundamental geospatial information to the public.

The resource persons from MGB and the Geospatial Information System Management Branch (GISMB) provided overviews of select projects of NAMRIA during the briefing. Engr. Roberto L. Callorina, Chief of the Network Administration Section of the Geospatial Information and Communications Technology Division-GISMB, presented the NAMRIA data center’s network architecture; Mr. Melvin O. Perez of the Geospatial Systems Development Division-GISMB discussed and demonstrated the use of Geoportal Philippines; and Engr. Nicandro P. Parayno, Chief of the Photogrammetry Division-MGB, provided an overview of the Unified Mapping Project and topographic base map production.
