Volume XXXIV, Issue No. 10
By: Marco Arkiel C. Ilagan

In line with NAMRIA’s continuous capacity-building efforts on Geographic Information System (GIS), the Geomatics Training Center (GTC), under the Geospatial Information System Management Branch (GISMB), conducted a hybrid training on GIS using Quantum GIS software at the BSWM SRDC Building in Quezon City on 06-08 April 2022. It was participated in by selected practitioners of civil engineering, agricultural engineering, computer science, and other related fields from the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) of the Department of Agriculture (DA). The said learning event is the result of the formal request made by BSWM Geomatics and Soil Information Technology Division Division Chief, Mr. Bertolio P. Arellano and GIS Section Chief, Mr. Andrew Flores. Given the foregoing, a Memorandum of Agreement was made and duly signed by NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco, PhD and BSWM Director, Engr. Pablo M. Montalla.

The primary objective of the five-day training was to provide practical knowledge and skills in utilizing GIS in planning, development, and management stages of various soil management and irrigation projects. The specific objectives were to (a) discuss the concept of GIS in developing spatial-based applications; (b) define the functions of GIS in generating geospatial data for soils and water management; and (c) describe the importance of the use of geospatial technologies for soil information technology.

The GTC of NAMRIA is introducing the conduct of hybrid trainings in its offerings owing to improvements on the current situation amid the pandemic. Such trainings utilize a combination of virtual and face-to-face methods complemented by self-directed and assisted learning.

Mr. Alvin A. Laurio of the Geospatial Information Services Division (GISD)-GISMB served as the resource speaker of the training. Technical and administrative assistance to the training was provided by this writer, who is also of GISD-GISMB.
