NAMRIA continued to lead in providing services particularly in the conduct of water, coastal and land surveys. These include:

1) the provision of geodetic controls used for land surveys and production of maps;

2) the conduct of hydrographic and oceanographic surveys used by mariners, marine scientists, fishermen and people involved in coastal development; and

3) land classification surveys.

Section 01. Surveying

Hydrographic Surveys

Surveys whose principal purpose is the determination of data relating to bodies of water. A hydrographic survey may consist of the determination of one or several of the following classes of data: depth water; configuration and nature of the bottom; directions and force of currents; heights and times of tides and water stages; and location of fixed objects for survey and navigation purposes.

Physical Oceanographic Surveys

Studies or examination of the physical characteristics of ocean water such as salinity, temperature, density, etc., and dynamics such as tides, currents and waves.

Geodetic Surveys

Surveys being conducted primarily to establish, density and maintain the Philippine Geodetic Control (horizontal and vertical network).

Topographic/Photogrammetric Surveys

Determination of the horizontal and vertical positions of natural and man-made features of the earth's surface to be presented on a topographic map. Photogrammetric surveys include the use of aerial photographs.

Land Classification Surveys

These involve the classification of the country's unclassified public forests into alienable or disposable lands, as well as the evaluation of existing land classification projects and the verification of land classification status.

Section 03. Information Management

Systems Development and Programming Services

Systems Programming Development and Programming Division (SDPD) provides expertise in systems analysis, design and programming in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) technology, surveying, mapping, remote sensing, natural environment applications, and management information. Also, development of web-based applications and networking services are offered by this division.

The Database Management Division (DMD) offers services in design, creation and maintenance of GIS and Statistical/ENR databases. Projects on data standardization and data exchange have strengthened the expertise of NAMRIA in this regard.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Training

Through the Geomatics Training Center (GTC), NAMRIA offers GIS training to both government and private organizations. Courses offered are: Introduction to GIS, Advanced GIS, GIS for Managers, etc.

A topographic map is a graphic representation of the earth's natural and man-made features. The shape and elevation of the terrain are portrayed in them.

This map is a fundamental tool for planning, researches and studies. This is used as base map and forms an essential part in the preparation of other kinds of thematic maps.

The Philippine topographic maps at 1:250,000 scale were produced in 1954 with information from the Philippine Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Army Map Service, Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Bureau of Public Highways, and other agencies. Elevation is expressed in 100-m contour line interval.
