To exchange ideas and expertise on the modernization of the Philippine National Geodetic System, the Mapping and Geodesy Branch (MGB) of NAMRIA held a video conference with the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) on 13 January 2015 at the NAMRIA Boardroom.

In his welcome address, NAMRIA Deputy Administrator (DA) Jose C. Cabanayan, Jr. extended his glad hand by acknowledging GSI’s role in the efforts of the agency to modernize the national geodetic system by having the country geospatially empowered by 2020. “With the developments in Geodesy, and with the increasing demand for up-to-date, reliable, and accurate geospatial information, it is but fitting that we embark on this program in order to effectively respond to the needs of our changing times,” DA Cabanayan said further.

After which, MGB-Geodesy Division (GD) OIC-Chief Cdr. Ronaldo C. Gatchalian delivered his presentation entitled “Geodetic Reference System in the Philippines: Situationer” with the outline focusing on the Datums in Use, Horizontal Control Network, Vertical Control Network, Gravity Network, and Modernization of the National Geodetic System.

Highlights of the said presentation are reports on the current status of the projects being implemented by the MGB-GD, as follows: (1) completed the installation of 28 out of 38 target active geodetic stations nationwide; (2) upgraded 60 pre-selected geodetic control points into zero-order accuracy; (3) as of 05 January 2015, a total of 37,595 PRS92 geodetic control points densified, 22,852 kilometers of 1st and 2nd order level lines established, 45 tide gauge bench marks connected to the level line for use in the adjustment of the national vertical network, and 1,711 1st and 2nd order gravity stations established all over the country; and, (4) proposed initiatives for the Geodetic Network Development, which are migration to geocentric datum and development of the Philippine Geoid Model.

Exchange of questions and ideas came next after Cdr. Gatchalian’s presentation and this was facilitated by Engr. Charisma Victoria D. Cayapan of the Philippine Active Geodetic Network-GD. MGB Director Ruel DM. Belen gave the closing remarks wherein he thanked GSI for the support they are giving the agency throughout the years.

Present during the video conference were DA Cabanayan, Jr., MGB Director Belen, MGB Assistant Director Ofelia T. Castro, MGB-GD OIC-Chief Cdr. Gatchalian, Technical Consultant on Geodesy Prof. Epifanio D. Lopez, and staff from GD represented NAMRIA while Mr. Shin-ichi Sakabe and Mr. Tetsurou Imakiire, Director of International Affairs Div.-Planning Dept. and Director-General of Geography and Crustal Dynamics Research Center, respectively, headed the GSI panel.
