Public Affairs | Jeff Aguillon | 24 April 2019 | Print

NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco led the agency’s top officials and employees in a cleanup drive for the rivers and “esteros” or inlets in Pateros and Taguig last 31 March 2019.  Dubbed the “Battle for Rivers and Esteros,” the event was spearheaded by the DENR and was held simultaneously along eight waterways identified by the department as draining into Manila Bay.  The conduct of the cleanup was in accordance with the DENR’s pledge to rehabilitate Manila Bay so it would be fit for swimming and other forms of recreation. NAMRIA was tasked to lead the cleanup in Barangay Hagonoy in Taguig and in both Barangay Martires and Barangay Aguho in Pateros.  The NAMRIA contingent was joined by volunteers from Makati Development Corporation, Manila Water, Philippine Navy, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection, and local residents.  Overall, the simultaneous cleanup covered 28 barangays in Taguig while the 10 barangays in Pateros concentrated their efforts in Barangay Martires and Barangay Aguho.

A total of 29 tributaries, 17 in Taguig and 12 in Pateros, were identified during the initial meeting held on 20 March 2019 of Deputy Administrator (DA) Jose C. Cabanayan, Jr. and DA Efren P. Carandang with representatives of local government units.  An ocular inspection of the identified tributaries was conducted on 22 March 2019 by Administrator Tiangco together with Ms. Mylene Consolacion and Mr. Celedonio Castueras, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officers of Pateros.  The ocular inspection was carried out to determine which among the 29 tributaries were to be prioritized for the cleanup drive.
