NAMRIA hosted the first core group writeshop for the updating of the Manila Bay Atlas (MBEA) Project at Summit Ridge in Tagaytay on 26-27 February 2015. The event was spearheaded by NAMRIA Geospatial Information System Management Branch (GISMB) Assistant Director Febrina E. Damaso, the current chair of the NAMRIA Technical Working Group (TWG).

A core group was formed to be able to fast-track the updating process for the MBEA. Aside from NAMRIA, the following agencies were selected because they are the major contributors to the Atlas: Manila Bay Coordinating Office (MBCO); Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), DENR-Region 3; DENR-Region 4A; National Water Resources Board; Forest Management Bureau; Philippine Ports Authority; Bureau of Solid Waste Management (BSWM); Biodiversity Management Bureau; Pasig River Rehabilitation Council; Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources; Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Atmospherical Services Administration; River Basin Coordinating Office; and Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).

MBCO Executive and Program Director Gaerlan gives the opening message

The event started with a short speech by MBCO Executive and Program Director Noel Antonio V. Gaerlan. He said that “the output of the MBEA rests in the core group’s hands and that appreciation is given for everyone’s participation.” An update on each participant’s write-ups soon followed including their issues and concerns over their respective assignments.

For the second part of the activity, a draft layout of the MBEA was presented by Mr. Eriberto N. Brillantes and Mr. Marlon A. Marinas, both of NAMRIA, to give the participants an idea on the appearance of the Atlas. Included in the layout are the updated data holdings and write-ups that have been submitted to the TWG. Further discussion on the layout soon followed and suggestions were raised. Ms. Edna D. Samar of BSWM proposed to make separate subsections for Watershed and Offshore under the Water Quality Section of the Atlas. The group also decided a change in title from Hydrology Section to Water Resources as well as include the following subsections namely Ground Water Supply, River Systems, and Salinity.

Before wrapping up the event, Mr. Anrrou R. Ramos of the MBCO reminded the participants of the deadlines they agreed upon for the submission of their write-ups as well as the presentation of the first draft of the MBEA which is scheduled to be held at DENR Head Office on 08 April 2015.
