Resource persons from HB were Mr. Dennis Arsenio B. Bringas - Chief of Physical Oceanography Division (POD), Engr. Michael Jayson S. Morata, Engr. Ian Bryan O. Navarro, Engr. Raul S. Capistrano, Mr. Norelius G. Baloran, Mr. Armando B. Amolo, and Mr. Rodante G. Pagador. Topics discussed during the training were the physical properties of the ocean, temperature and salinity instruments, duties and responsibilities of Tide Observers, tide station forms and documents, and calibration of instruments. The Tide Observers were also handed new thermometers and hydrometers to be used for the acquisition of accurate and reliable data from their respective tide stations. Actual exercises on the use of these instruments were also conducted.

Tide Observer Rolando P. Regado takes a reading on the hydrometer to measure water density
The purpose of the training was to show the positive relationship of salinity and density by collecting and measuring sea water samples to determine the contributions of various atmospheric and oceanographic events that influence changes in the density of sea water. The training provided a thorough insight on the importance of determining sea water temperature, density and salinity data to the study of climate change, sea level rise, fish stocks and migration, ocean circulations, algae growth, and many more.
The training was conducted in coordination with the Support Services Branch Human Resource (HR) Development Section and is part of capability building interventions in line with the agency’s strategic HR initiatives. POD and HR staff served as facilitators during the training. The same training program will be conducted for the Visayas and Mindanao Tide Observers next year.
The training concluded with the distribution of certificates and Go-bag emergency kits to the trainees. A short testimonial in recognition of Real, Quezon Tide Observer Rolando P. Regado’s invaluable service to NAMRIA, who will be retiring soon from the government service, was also held during the closing ceremony. Mr. Bringas, in his closing remarks, thanked the tide observers for their participation and encouraged everyone to continue to work efficiently in providing oceanographic data to the public.
