NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco - 2019 UPLB Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus awardee for Public Governance

NAMRIA Administrator, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco, a graduate in 1985 of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry,was the recipient of the 2019 College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) Distinguished Alumnus Award for Public Governance of the UPLB Alumni Association.  The award was given during the Alumni and Fellowship Awards Ceremony held at Baker Hall, UPLB in the afternoon of 09 October 2019.  The ceremony was part of the celebration, with the themePatuloy na Tumutugon sa Hamon ng Bayan, of UPLB Loyalty Day and of the 2019 Grand Alumni Homecoming.   UPLB Loyalty Day marked its 101st year on 10 October 2019.

The Administrator was chosen for his more than 30 years of experience in space technology applications in natural resource development planning and management; for his extensive field practice, research, technical training and specialized skills in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System, and Global Positioning System applications in comprehensive land use planning, inventory and mapping of natural resources, watershed development and management, hydrography and oceanography, thematic and base mapping, project design and evaluation and microcomputers; for his dynamism as Administrator of  NAMRIA which enabled the Philippines to earn rightful claim for an Extended Continental Shelf in the Benham Rise Region (now called Philippine Rise) before the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf; for his pivotal role in the signing of the historic maritime boundary agreement between the Philippines and Indonesia in 2014 after almost 20 years of negotiations; for his outstanding work that led to the granting of ISO Certification for Mapping and Geospatial Information Management; for his leading the formulation of a strategic framework that serves as template to all member states on the use of geospatial information before, during, and after disaster events; and for his receiving, in April of this year, the prestigious Mancono Award, a recognition given to the Most Outstanding Alumnus of the CFNR.  Mancono is the common name for the Philippine ironwood (Xanthosternon Verdugoniames Vames), a tree species native to the Philippine that is known to yield the hardest timber.
