NAMRIA, through its Hydrography Branch (HB), conducted a series of hydrographic surveys in the province of Mindoro. Field survey teams headed by Ltjg. Marlon E. Estropia and Lt Kristoffer Ian T. Zapanta were consecutively deployed to Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro and Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, respectively, from February to April this year.

With an aggregate area of almost 40 square kilometres (km2), intensive surveying was done in two months using single-beam and multibeam echosounders which ensure fast and efficient data acquisition. Moreover, temporary tide stations were built in these locations to properly observe the tidal pattern and to ensure the accuracy of tide data.

On 20 May 2019, a field survey team headed by Lt Gilbert A. Alviola was deployed to the island of Lubang where 42 km2 of its navigable waters, which are critical to maritime safety, were surveyed. Thorough hydrographic surveys for data acquisition were done in the area in a month. The NAMRIA HB will continue to conduct hydrographic surveys of other parts of Mindoro in the succeeding months. Hydrographic surveys are being done as part of the agency’s mandate to produce nautical charts for marine transportation and safety of navigation.
